Grading at the kitchen table

Growing up, Mom graded papers at the kitchen table every Sunday with a green pen because she thought red pen was 'too loud'. She would read the best answers out loud to us. I didn't understand access control, but I understood that she was proud of her students.

The colleague who reads your grant at midnight

Every grant I've submitted since 2018 has Helen's comments on it, usually timestamped after 11pm. She is the person in the building everyone asks for a second read — and she never makes you feel bad about the first draft.

She stayed after the final to help me switch majors

The night of the MIS 301 final, I waited until everyone had left to ask Professor Zhao whether it was too late to switch into the major. She sat on the edge of the stage with my transcript for forty minutes and mapped out every semester until graduation. I'm now a security engineer. I still have the sheet of paper.

How she taught me to write a rejection letter

My first paper was rejected with three brutal reviews. Helen asked me to write the reviewers a thank-you note — not to send, just to write. By the end of the note I knew exactly how to fix the paper. I now ask my own students to do the same.
